The Reason You Need More Firewood Before The Summer

There is a debate about when spring starts, where you can take your pick between meteorological spring (starting on March 1st) and astronomical spring, which begins at the equinox (March 20th) this year. Either way, spring has now sprung.

With the days getting longer and winter now behind us by any definition, it may seem like the last thing you need to consider is buying more sustainable firewood.

After all, your evenings won't be about sitting indoors in a room warmed by a stove while it is cold outside, but, increasingly, about sunny evenings sitting in the garden with a glass of your favourite tipple or enjoying a barbecue.

However, this is exactly when you should be getting some wood. Few things can be more atmospheric on a summer evening than sitting around a wood burner, enjoying its warmth and glow and perhaps toasting a few marshmallows as the sun sets and the air cools. It means you can stay outside for longer in the perpetual twilight of summer.

This is a detail that can easily be missed. For example, BBQ Generals once published a long list of all the things needed for a great BBQ. It included the obvious elements for cooking and serving food, as well as the use of space. But when it came to atmosphere as the evening darkens, it listed things like lanterns and LED candles for light, but nothing about warmth.

Don't make such a mistake in 2025. As long as the weather behaves, this could be the best of years for outdoor fun before the summer even starts in earnest.

Firstly, there is an unusually late Easter, with Easter Sunday (April 20th) only five days before the latest possible date of April 25th (which next happens in 2038).

The May bank holiday will also be a special occasion this year, as it marks the start of four days of celebrations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, so you can enjoy a 40s-themed party to mark the occasion - but without food rationing!
