Top 3 Tips For Storing Firewood

If you have a stash of sustainable firewood for your log burner, chances are that you want to be confident it will spark up and burn well when you come to put it in your stove. To ensure that your fire is always roaring when you light it, you need to ensure you store your firewood in the right conditions.

Here are our top three tips for storing firewood so that it's ready when the colder weather arrives:

1. Keep it dry

That might sound obvious, but you want your firewood to be dry. If you keep your wood indoors this will likely be less of an issue. But if your wood store is outside, make sure it is protected from rain and not located on moist ground. HETAS points out that dry logs also reduce the environmental impact of log burners.

2. Lift it off the ground

To keep your firewood dry, especially if it's outdoors, you don't want it to be in contact with the ground. Instead, use the likes of pallets or a wood rack to keep your logs slightly elevated. This will ensure they don't absorb moisture throughout the summer and end up damp, or worse, decaying, by the time you want to light your fire.

3. Make sure it's ventilated

Ventilation is the other key to keeping your firewood in good condition. As well as elevating it off the ground, make sure there are gaps between the logs to allow the air to circulate. If you have a cover over your wood, make sure this is breathable so that it doesn't trap moisture in too.

In the summer months, it can be easy to neglect your firewood store and to think that because the weather is warm and (mostly) dry, that it will be fine. But we'd recommend checking it regularly to make sure that it's still in good condition. That way you can make adjustments to your storage solution as necessary and be ready for a toasty log fire when the autumn arrives.
