Summer is a perfect time to buy sustainable firewood ready for the temperatures to drop, as long as you stack it in the right place and the right way to maximise its seasoning and minimise the kinds of interlopers that can affect its burn later.
The firewood you buy from expert suppliers will meet Ready to Burn certification, but keeping it that way requires you to take care of it over the summer.

Keep Sustainable Firewood Elevated
In general, you do not really want firewood to touch the ground, as that makes for the most ideal circumstances for insects and other pests to grow.
A rack, shelf or firewood basket is ideal, but pallets and cement locks will also help out here.
Keep Sustainable Firewood Sheltered
Even during a summer filled with heatwaves, the risk of rain is never too far away, and in order to keep the firewood under the 20 per cent moisture content necessary for Ready to Burn certification, you need to cover your firewood up.
A rack with a shelter is the best option, but if that is not available, then using a tarpaulin will work effectively as long as the sides are left open to ensure that air flows around the logs.
Avoid Stacking Firewood Against The Walls Of Your Home
The temptation is to stockpile firewood close to your home to avoid long walks on cold, dark nights to restock. However, doing so could invite pests into your home.
Carpenter ants, spiders and mice often seek shelter under pieces of wood, and putting them close to your home could invite them into your home to feast on food and the wooden parts of your house.
Ideally, you should keep your firewood pile around ten metres away from your home where possible to avoid bigger issues.
