Provider of quality logs
Cutting and splitting local hardwood for local fires from our yard in Amberley since 2012.
Started small in 2012. Still done the same way.
Southdowns Firewood began in 2012 on a very small scale. Fourteen years on we are one of the leading suppliers in the area, and honestly, very little about the job has changed.
Everything still happens at our yard in Amberley. Timber comes in from woodland close by, it is cut and split in the yard, and it is dried in vented bulk bags in our barn until it is dry enough to burn properly. Then the truck is loaded and it comes to you.
Growing has not meant adding a catalogue of options or a call centre between you and your logs. It has meant more loads, better kit and a lot of customers who order the same thing every autumn.
- Trading from Amberley since 2012
- Cut, split and seasoned at our own yard
- Simple prices, one person to speak to
Locally sourced
Being located in the heart of the South Downs, we like to keep everything local. All of our timber is sourced from within a 10 mile radius of our yard.
That matters for two reasons. The first is quality: we know the woodland our hardwood comes from and we see it before we buy it, so nothing arrives as a pallet of unknowns. The second is distance. Wood that travels a few miles costs less to move than wood shipped across a continent, and that shows up in the price you pay.
It also keeps the money in the valley. The people we buy from are neighbours, and so are most of the people we deliver to.
- Hardwood from woodland within 10 miles of Amberley
- Cut and split at our own yard, not bought in ready-bagged
- Cut to the length your burner takes
Sustainability
We pride ourselves on selling the best quality sustainably sourced logs at competitive prices. We would rather tell you exactly what that means than dress it up.
It means buying from managed woodland, where trees are taken on a cycle and the wood grows back. It means short journeys, from the wood to the yard to your log store, all inside a 12 mile ring. And it means seasoning the logs properly before they leave us.
That last part does more good than most people expect. Dry wood gives out far more heat and far less smoke than wet wood, so you burn less of it for the same warm room. Wet logs waste energy boiling off water, coat your flue in tar and put smoke out of the chimney. Getting the wood dry is the single most useful thing a firewood merchant can do.
- Timber from managed local woodland
- Short journeys from stump to log store
- Barn stored in vented bags until it burns clean
Why buy direct from the yard
There is no depot, no call centre and no queue. There is a yard, a truck and the person who cuts your logs.
You deal with the yard direct
The person who takes your call is the person who cuts your logs and tips them on your drive. Nothing gets lost in between.
One price, said once

Local knowledge
We know the lanes, the gateways and the awkward drives around Amberley, Arundel and Storrington. Say where you want it and it goes there.
Turning up when we say
Customers mention this more often than they mention the wood. A delivery day we agree is a delivery day we keep.
