Seasoned hardwood logs, cut to fit your burner

Local hardwood, split, seasoned for two years and barn stored in vented bags until it's properly dry, cut to the length you ask for, and tipped where you want it.

What a load actually looks like

A load is two cubic metres of split hardwood, mainly ash and beech, tipped loose. Not bagged, not shrink-wrapped on a pallet: the truck backs up, the body goes up, and the logs come off where you point.

On the ground it makes a heap about the footprint of a small car and roughly waist high, so it’s worth clearing a spot before we arrive. Stacked into a log store it takes up noticeably less room than the loose pile suggests.

How long it lasts depends on how often you burn. A fire at weekends and on the colder evenings, and a load can see out most of a winter. A burner lit every night from October, and you’ll be ringing us again well before spring.

Rows of vented bulk bags full of split logs on pallets under the barn roof
Barnstored, under cover

Barn stored, with the air moving through

Once it’s split, the wood goes into vented bulk bags, up on pallets in our barn. The roof keeps the rain off, and the vented sides of the bags let air reach every log. That steady airflow is what draws the moisture out.

A barn is about the best place there is to dry firewood. A stack left outside soaks up water every time it rains, and wood sealed under a sheet sweats. In the barn it just keeps drying, so by the time it leaves us it’s ready to burn.

  • Stored under cover in our barn
  • Vented bags, so air reaches every log
  • Kept up off the ground on pallets
  • Under 20% moisture before it leaves the yard

One free with every 2m³ load

Every 2m³ load leaves the yard with an extra-large net of kindling on top, at no extra cost. Finely split, dry, and enough to get a good few fires away without fighting them. The free net comes with the 2m³ load only, not with a 1m³ load or bags of offcuts.

If you light a fire most days you’ll want more than one. Nets are £7 each, or 5 for £30, and come on the same delivery: add them to your basket or say how many when you book.

£7 per net, or 5 for £30

  • Extra-large net
  • Dry and finely split, ready to light
  • One free net only with a 2m³ load
  • £7 each or 5 for £30, delivered with your logs

Know what you're buying

You don't need a moisture meter to spot a wet load. Three quick checks will tell you most of what you need to know, whoever you buy from.

Pick a log up

Water is heavy. A dry log feels surprisingly light for its size, and green wood feels solid and cold in the hand.

  • Light for its size
  • Knock two together: dry rings, wet thuds

Look at the ends

As wood dries it shrinks, and the end grain cracks. Those splits radiating out from the centre are a good sign.

  • Shakes and cracks across the end grain
  • Bark that lifts away easily rather than clinging on

Watch the first fire

Wet wood tells on itself within minutes. Most of the heat goes into boiling the water off instead of into the room.

  • Dry logs catch quickly and burn with a clear flame
  • Wet logs hiss, steam at the ends and blacken the glass

Wet wood also lines your flue with tar, which is the expensive part. If a load fails these checks it wasn’t ready to sell. Ours doesn’t leave the yard until it passes them.

The things people ask before ordering

How much is a load of logs?

£240 for a 2m³ loose load, delivered, which includes a free XL net of kindling. A 1m³ load is £135 and a builder’s bag of offcuts £55 (minimum two bags, or one with a loose load), both delivered. Delivery is included anywhere within 12 miles of Amberley. Kindling nets are £7 each, or 5 for £30.

Do you deliver to me?

If you’re within 12 miles of Amberley, yes, and the delivery is included in the price. That covers Arundel, Storrington and Sullington, Pulborough, Littlehampton, Rustington, East Preston, Angmering, Ferring, Findon, Worthing, Lancing, Steyning, Petworth, Midhurst, Bognor Regis, Pagham, Poling, Adversane and Chichester.

If you’re on the edge of that, it’s still worth asking. Check your postcode or give us a ring.

Can you tip it on my drive?

Yes – that’s how a load normally arrives. It’s tipped loose wherever you want it, as long as the truck can reach the spot. We tip; we don’t barrow or stack.

Tell us where you’d like it when you book, and mention anything tight: a narrow entrance, a low branch, a gate that needs unlocking. We’d rather know in advance than work it out on the day.

What size are the logs?

Whatever your burner takes. Tell us the length you want when you order and the load is cut to suit. Customers ask regularly and we’re happy to oblige – it costs nothing extra.

Do I get kindling with my load?

With a 2m³ load, yes – one extra-large net comes free. It doesn’t come with a 1m³ load or bags of offcuts. Extra nets are £7 each or 5 for £30, and come on the same delivery.

How should I store the logs once they arrive?

Off the ground, with a roof over the top and the sides left open. Air moving through the stack matters more than anything else – wood sealed under a tarpaulin sweats and goes backwards.

A few pallets and a sheet of tin will do the job. There’s more on this in our guide to storing firewood.

How much notice do you need?

About a week is ideal. Once the cold weather sets in it can take a little longer, so if you’re running low, ring sooner rather than later.
