Terms of sale

The terms we sell and deliver firewood on, written the way we'd explain them on the phone. Short, fair, and no small print.

Who you’re buying from

Southdowns Firewood is a sole trader business based in Amberley, West Sussex. Phone 07793 500129 or 01903 882531, email info@southdownsfirewood.co.uk. Those are where orders are handled and where any notice about an order should be sent.

These terms apply to firewood and kindling we sell and deliver. They sit alongside your legal rights as a consumer, which nothing on this page takes away.

There is no fuel surcharge and no delivery charge inside the radius. If you are just outside it, ring and ask – we’ll tell you honestly whether we can help.

Orders go up to 2m³ of logs per delivery. Anything larger is a custom order: email us and we’ll quote it.

Placing an order

Order online through the basket and checkout, by email using the order form on any product, or by phone, WhatsApp or the contact page. A delivery date you choose when ordering by email is a preference: we’ll call to confirm the day. For an online order we’ll be in touch after you check out to agree the delivery date.

For phone, WhatsApp and email orders, we’ll confirm what you’re having, the price and a delivery day, and that confirmation is the point the order is agreed – before it, nothing is committed on either side. An online order is agreed when we confirm it after you check out.

The price we confirm when you order is the price you pay. If prices change afterwards, an order already agreed is unaffected.

Delivery

  • Where. Within a 12 mile radius of Amberley, which covers Arundel, Storrington, Pulborough, Littlehampton, Rustington, East Preston, Angmering, Ferring, Findon, Worthing, Lancing, Steyning, Petworth, Midhurst, Bognor Regis, Pagham, Poling, Adversane, Sullington and Chichester.
  • How. Loose loads are tipped off the truck. We need room to back the truck in and tip – somewhere the truck can reach, where the logs can sit until you stack them.
  • Access. Tell us before the day about anything awkward: a narrow lane, a low branch, a gate that needs unlocking, soft ground, a shared drive. It saves a wasted journey for both of us.
  • Timing. We agree a day in advance – a week’s notice is ideal, and a little more in busy periods. Weather and ground conditions can move it – a waterlogged drive or a soft verge is a good way to lose a loaded truck. If we need to change the day we’ll ring you, and we’ll offer the next one that works.
  • If you’re out. You don’t have to be there. Tell us where you’d like the load and we’ll tip it there. Once it’s tipped, looking after it is down to you.

Loads are tipped loose – we don’t barrow them round the back or stack them for you. If you’re outside the 12 mile radius, ring and ask: delivery further out is sometimes possible by arrangement.

Payment

Online orders are paid by bank transfer (BACS) before delivery, using your order number as the reference; our bank details are shown when you place the order. For orders by phone, WhatsApp or email, payment is due on delivery – cash, cheque, bank transfer and card are all accepted. Either way, we won’t ask for anything that wasn’t agreed when you ordered.

Changing or cancelling an order

If you need to change the day, add a net of kindling or cancel altogether, please give us at least 24 hours’ notice. Ring or WhatsApp – the earlier the better, because a load that has already been cut and loaded is harder to undo than one that’s a week away.

Where an order is placed at a distance – by phone, email or through the website – you may also have a legal right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Nothing on this page takes that away.

Firewood is a natural product

Every load comes off trees, not a production line, so a certain amount of variation is normal and not a fault:

  • The mix of hardwood varies with whatever has been felled locally that season.
  • Logs are cut to the length you ask for, as closely as a saw and a natural log allow.
  • Diameter, bark, colour and weight differ from log to log.
  • A 1m³ or 2m³ load is measured loose, as it comes off the truck. Loose logs carry air gaps between them, so the same load takes up less room once you’ve stacked it neatly.

What shouldn’t vary is the quality. Our logs are seasoned hardwood, sourced within 10 miles of the yard, with no rubbish padding the load out.

Looking after your load

Logs arrive ready to burn, but they can pick moisture back up if they’re left out in the wet. Get them off the ground, keep a roof or a sheet over the top, and leave the sides open so the air can move through. Burn them in an appliance or fireplace that’s suitable for wood and has been swept.

There’s more on all of this on our advice pages.

On your property

We take care when we deliver. If we damage something while we’re there, tell us straight away and we’ll sort it out.

What we can’t take responsibility for is damage to ground that was never going to take the weight – soft lawns, unmade drives, block paving over sand, drain covers – where you’ve asked us to drive over it. If we’re not happy about the ground on the day, we’ll say so before we move onto it and find somewhere else to tip.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute can be brought before the courts of England and Wales.
